Cloak

Update: Cloak now redirects to encrypt.me.

The people on this listserv have a few things in common:

1. We all love stories.
2. We all love finding new tools that can help us do better work.
3. We all spend entirely too much time in coffee shops.

Yes, we’ve all been tempted by the siren song that is free coffee shop WiFi. Give me that WiFi, a nearby electrical outlet and some caffeine, and my afternoon’s spent.

But there’s an issue: Those free WiFi networks aren’t secure. And if you’re doing work on an unsecured network — whether at Starbucks or the airport or on the Chinatown bus to Boston — you’re putting your information at risk.

But never fear. Today’s tool can keep your devices safe on those open wireless networks.

Cloak is an app for Macs — your laptop, iPad or iPhone — that keeps your data safe.

I won’t get too nerdy with the tech details here, but in a sentence: Cloak takes all the stuff you’re doing online, encrypts it and sends it through Cloak’s secure servers, which means that the creepster two tables down from you at Starbucks won’t be able to hack into your Facebook account.

When you log into an unsecured network, Cloak automatically turns itself on to keep you and your data safe. The next time you’re at Starbucks, you can do work knowing that you’ve got a security blanket for your computer.

Cloak has three different pricing plans. The free plan gets you two hours of browsing. Then there’s an $8/month and a $15/month plan — both of which give you unlimited browsing time. (You’d only need to go with the $15 plan if you’re using a ton of data.)
