Doing you one better: an all-purpose call recorder

It’s probably bad newsletter etiquette to tackle the same subject two weeks in a row, but Chrys Wu sent me a tool that so far surpasses last week’s, I’m sending this one almost as a correction.

She recommended Audio Hijack, an app with an admittedly high price point ($49) but the ability to capture any audio drifting in, out or around your computer. It was also created by somebody calling themselves Rogue Amoeba.

Audio Hijack not only replaces any other audio recorder you might need, but it has all sorts of editing and organizing tools in its nifty drag-and-drop interface.

I’ve already used it to record a couple radio interviews, and the audio quality is better than Call Recorder. The app can record or edit a bunch of different formats, affecting the quality and file size of your audio.

It looks like you can use the free trial indefinitely as long as you’re okay with less than stellar audio quality. Our amoeba friend also offers audio editing software and some other cool stuff I mean to try out.
