Sqoop! (shoo be doo wop)

G’morning, reporters. Today I’m writing from the media lounge at Collision Conference, a casual gathering of almost 10,000 tech and startup enthusiasts right here in New Orleans. Here’s hoping I’ll pick up a few new tools for you guys.

In the spirit of #CollisionConf, I decided to feature a media startup this week. Sqoop compiles and organizes tens of thousands of SEC, PACER and patent filings for your perusing pleasure.

I’m not sure why the developer picked those three particular sources, but it looks like they’re working on others like the FCC and FDA.

The list of results seems a little haphazard… It reminds me a bit of data.gov: you plug in a search for “student loans,” and you get an unorganized list of everything from schools to bank policies.

But Sqoop does allow you to limit your search by location, which is cool, and you can drill down in results: just 10-K filings among SEC filings, for example.

Here’s hoping they add in those other sources soon – more is always better. And if anyone is at Collision, hit me up!
