Happy New Year, reporters! Hope you all had a good break. I’ve got a little new year magic for you. (Actually, data reporters hate it when you call their work “magic,” but the tool’s name is Geomancer and its logo is an adorable little Web 2.0 wizard, so let’s go with it.)
Geomancer matches data with other data. Not very exciting, I know, but it lets you do things like find per capita budgets rather than just plain numbers budgets. That’s exactly what I did with a data set this morning (that I scraped with Tabula, natch).
That’s part of the magic (sorry) of data journalism: you’ve got a list of, say, robberies, and you can map those robberies against things like income level. All it takes is is this little geowizard.
Impress your friends! Start your year with some data journalism!
