Handling huge collaborative projects

Happy Tuesday, reporters! Way back towards the beginning of this newsletter, three years ago(!), I came across a tool called Airtable. Back then, I pooh-poohed it as “spreadsheets with bells and whistles added.”

But I was wrong! Airtable is in fact super robust and kickass – if you’re using it for collaboration.

I finally started using it for real when Emojination came along. Emojination coordinates untold numbers of volunteers, designers, writers and editors to add new emoji to your iPhone.

And they use Airtable to manage it all:

You see those tabs across the top, tracking authors across different proposals? And the dropdown menu, that lets you choose a status for each row?

That’s what made me realize that Airtable is WAY better than Google Sheets for working with a large number of contributors and a large number of contributions. I won’t go into all the features here, but if you ever find yourself having to manage a collaborative project, try it out.

Plus, if you’re dying to use an emoji that isn’t available yet, let Emojination know.
