A tool to see what the media is covering

Hello, reporters! And a hearty welcome to new subscribers from the journalism.co.uk article. Here’s hoping TFR lives up to your expectations.

Not sure if anyone noticed, but this issue is WAY late, so in penance, I’m dropping a quick tool today and then back to regular scheduling next week.

I actually recommended Media Cloud over a year ago, but I wanted to resurface it real quick.

Media Cloud searches the text published by news outlets to see what they’re covering. There’s a LOT of claims out there about “the media covers this, the media is ignoring that,” and it bugs me to no end that there’s a tool out there that actually measures that, and no one uses it.

Right now, I see a lot of claims about certain candidates getting more coverage, which prompted the very quick search I tweeted above. Media Cloud also has really interesting ways to explore “right wing” media, Russian media, broadcast media, and so on and so on, so it’s also fun to just poke through.

Next week I will get back to our regular schedule with a new tool. Happy weekend!
