Greetings again, reporters! This time we’re talking about a pretty new tool, or at least new to me, albeit with an almost painfully simple name: MapChecking.
MapChecking calculates the size of an area, and then calculates how many people may be standing in it – based on how thick the crowd is.
Obviously, you would use this for crowd estimation, like at protests and such. I hear crowd counting is a very imperfect science, but MapChecking is a really interesting tool to have on deck for it.
I was shocked, for instance, that Washington Square, a famous park in NYC, could hold 65,000 people – and that’s without a heavy crowd! That’s way, way off from what I would have guessed. I’ve never been good at that guess-the-beans-in-the-jar game.
I also want to know, kind of off-topic: does anyone know a good bookmarking tool? My friend tweeted this yesterday, and I’m shocked that years have gone by without a good replacement for Delicious. (I know about Pinboard, but it’s paid.) Do people just not use bookmarks anymore or something?
