Hello, reporters! Long time no see. Hope everyone had a good 4th of July break (or some kind of break, if you’re not US-based).
I recently saw that ProPublica (my current employer, disclosure disclosure) reupped its Nursing Home Inspect tool. You can look up inspections, violations, fines and suspicious care facilities all over the US.
Obviously, this tool is US-based, but if you yourself aren’t, nursing homes are still a great research topic for a story. Sadly, there is often a lot of bad activity going on, and simply no one covering it it. The recent NICAR conference had a session on investigating these facilities, and GIJN offers a walkthrough as well.
