Office hours for the never-ending student among us

This Friday, Big Local News is hosting “open office hours” to anyone who wants to come and talk with their data team. They offer them a few times a year, and they’re not the only ones – INN, who I’m also a fan of, used to do this weekly.

I’m a fan of Big Local News (I just shared one of their tools a few months ago), but I mostly wanted to promote this as the kind of thing you can get from wellmeaning journalism orgs all over the place.

The SPLC and RCFP, for example, offer legal advice hotlines, and SPJ offers an advice line for race and gender questions.

I realize that’s a pretty broad recommendation, but I didn’t want to promote just one solo event (let’s not all swarm Big Local News on Friday, eh?). Instead, you might want to sign up for newsletters at orgs like these, so you know what’s up. Always keep learning, reporters!
