Where did that URL come from?

Greetings, reporters! Today we have another one-use-only tool, because I think it is so helpful. ExpandURL is a tool that Mike Reilley recently featured on his popular Journalist’s Toolbox newsletter.

ExpandURL does “what it says on the tin,” as they say: it expands a shortened URL so that you can see the full thing.

This can be surprisingly insightful! I tried it on a stable link for one of my conference tutorials, and it did indeed show that the link leads to a Google Drive file, showing the full, very long original link. ExpandURL can track a link that was shared, lead you back to a source, or simply help you figure out what you’re looking at.

It has the bonus of checking whether the ending link is trustworthy, too. So you may want to try it on shortened links that show up unannounced in your text messages. Don’t click on sketchy links, reporters!
