When I did some trainings on this last year, I kept getting the question, but how do we know? How do we know if the government is using AI, or police agency or even local businesses? Well, there are several ways – informational interviews, public records requests and so on.
But one of them is the NCSL AI legislation tracker. It’s quite simple: filter for your state and see what AI-related legislation is coming up in chamber.
In Louisiana, for instance, I can see several AI-related bills were debated last year, but only one passed – and that was creating a committee to further discuss it. New York state, on the other hand, has a whopping 68 bills pending.
So – a relatively simple inroad to AI coverage, but quick to do. You can also search last year’s legislative session, and even the year before – perhaps to see how interest has changed? Keep an eye on AI, reporters!
