Learn about Native history

Hello, reporters! In honor of (American) Thanksgiving, let’s talk about the history of Native land rights.

Native Land Digital is a tool published by a Canadian nonprofit of the same name. It’s a huge, global, interactive map of Native land occupation and ownership over the centuries.

You can search for treaties, territories, states or even your own house. For example, I found out my apartment is in the former territory of the Chitimacha tribe. Native Land Digital provides a helpful popout page for each tribe and group, including its current leadership and further resources.

One thing I especially like about Native Land Digital is that it goes out of its way to state its sources and link to them. The sources for my location included a state folklife program, a local university and the tribe’s website.

I got the idea from a fascinating session at the Indigenous Journalists Association conference last summer. Look into it, reporters!
