Getting ready for climate emergencies

Hello, reporters! OpenNews, an org I have long been a fan of, recently released a new resource pack called Emergency Mode for News.

It’s a collection of tools, checklists and on-the-go guides for reporters covering climate disasters. Sadly, these days, pretty much everyone in the world is facing a crisis that could benefit from one of OpenNews’ premade “action packs.”

If you’re in Louisiana, like me, you may want to download the hurricane prep list. If you’re in Europe, you can take a look at the extreme heat tipsheet. Are you on the North American west coast? The wildfire preparedness checklist.

One challenge to huge projects like Emergency Mode for News is that they’re just so big. You probably don’t have the time (or inclination) to sift through everything they have to offer.

Luckily Emergency Mode for News offers an action pack assessment, where you can follow the prompts or check the boxes to find out what works for you. It does ask for a US zipcode but you can sort by climate type too. Don’t wait to prepare, reporters!
