Make illustrations accessible

Welcome back, everyone, and happy 2024! I’m excited to delve into things in the new year. One thing I want to get better at is making content more accessible, including visual illustrations.

Venngage is a tool I learned about from Jeremy Caplan (on his wonderful Wonder Tools newsletter) that prioritizes accessibility as a key feature of what it does. And what it does is make illustrations and easy-to-put-together data viz.

Venngage offers an accessibility check (similar to a spell check) as well as accessibility-first templates. You only get five designs for free, but you can swap those for new ones whenever you’re done with an illustration.

I haven’t talked much about illustrations since I recommended Blush, way back in 2020. (Coincidentally, also a Wonder Tools find!). It may not be something that you do often as a reporter, but if you do want to add a splash of color, or are struggling with something like dataviz, Venngage may be a tool for you.

One more thing...

And don’t forget – TFR’s Top Tools of 2023 came out last month! Check it out!
