Get better at identifying AI images

Hello, reporters! I have a fun one today. Well, scary. But kind of fun.

I was recently interviewed for a NiemanLab article on identifying AI-generated files, and it made me try to think of an actual, hands-on tool for doing this. Unfortunately, no full solution yet exists.

Last week, Ashley Edwards from the the Google News Initiative introduced me to something called Which Face is Real.

As its name might suggest, the site gives you a choice of two faces: one real, one AI-generated. If you follow tips on identifying AI (hands, ears, teeth, so on), you can get better and better at this. Edwards was able to correctly ID a series of faces, all live in front of an audience.

So! This is obviously not a catch-all solution. But at a time when we’re all scrambling for one (or it feels like it), it’s a good way to start getting more comfortable. Good luck with your identifications!
