DaVinci Resolve, a video tool used to edit actual Hollywood films, is available as a free desktop app. And not only that, as of right now, it’s the most highly recommended video editor – at least, among free ones.
This is good news, since Audacity (its counterpart in the audio world), in no way measures up to paid audio production tools. I was enthused to find that DaVinci Resolve mimics the layout and dashboard of other video editing tools, which you may be more familiar with, like Final Cut or Adobe Premiere.
The slight downside is that it’s very powerful, and therefore comes with a steep learning curve. (If you have ever tried to learn PhotoShop on your own, it reminds me of that.) It’s also available on iPads but not mobile phones, which is admittedly a limitation. For mobile editing, though, there are plenty of other impressive tools (have you taken a look at TikTok videos lately?).
In any case, this is a bit outside my wheelhouse, but I want to make sure we’re covering a good variety. Make your videos the best they can be, reporters!
